Ian Wright and Paul Scholes have had their say on Mohamed Salah and they are both in agreement as to how Liverpool should handle his worrying displays.
Mohamed Salah has been a phenomenal player for Liverpool over the years and he has been part of some fine attacking partnerships.
The most iconic of these was the front three of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, but while the latter two players have long since moved from Liverpool, the Egyptian has remained at Anfield.
Salah has therefore had to adapt to a new manager in Arne Slot, as well as playing alongside new teammates.
Questions were raised over the player’s performances during Slot’s first season in charge. However, Salah still produced strong numbers, registering a magnificent 29 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League.
The Egypt international is still outperforming the other members of the Liverpool first-team squad this season, but he has failed to gel with the club’s summer signings.
Ian Wright told Off Topic: “When you look at him now, he looks like a passenger. They are creating chances, but why is Mo so stagnant?
“Something’s missing from his game, something’s gone from him.”
Paul Scholes shares Wright’s concerns about Salah and he has reacted even more strongly to what the Liverpool winger is delivering throughout his teams’ matches.
The ex-United man has pointed out that even when Salah was firing in front of goal, there was something off about the way he was playing.
“His goals are missing aren’t they? I always thought even when he was scoring goals, Mo Salah, it looks ugly at times,” Scholes added.
“Some of the stuff he does, it bounces off his legs. He does some of the worst stuff you’ll see from a centre forward. He’s [Slot] going to have to leave him out at some point. Sometimes it’s a good thing being left out.”
Salah did not start Liverpool’s opening two Champions League fixtures against Galatasaray and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively. The Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat in Istanbul, but ran riot in Germany, recording an impressive 5-1 victory.
However, Salah has started all of Liverpool’s Premier League matches and when he has been subbed off, it has been in the closing minutes.
With other Liverpool players also failing to perform at the levels expected of them, including expensive summer signings, Slot might not be ready to drop Salah. Even with his performances causing concern, the 33-year-old is still the biggest goal threat at the club.
