Ex-England defender Rio Ferdinand believes Steven Gerrard made one crucial mistake during his professional football career.
Gerrard is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest player in Liverpool’s storied history, proving himself to be an influential presence in the dressing room throughout the course of his 17-year stint.
The central midfielder captained the club for a period of 12-years from 2003 right up until his shock move to MLS side LA Galaxy in January of 2015.
Gerrard racked up no less than nine major honours during his time on Merseyside, including that monumental UEFA Champions League Final success over AC Milan back in 2005.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Gerrard’s former England teammate claimed that he believes the Liverpool legend made a mistake by not playing for a ‘dominant team’ before retiring from the sport in 2016.
“His only problem was that he didn’t play for the team’s that were dominating at that time. I would have loved to have seen him in a team that were actually dominant and were winning consistently.
He was at Liverpool, a below par team really in the Premier League, who had the odd season where they challenged but they weren’t good enough.
That was the only shame for him, but he was Roy of the Rovers. He dragged over the line countless times in the biggest moments.”
Whilst he proved to be loyal to Liverpool throughout his 17-years with the club, Gerrard came close to exiting the Reds in 2005 until a potential £32 million transfer to Premier League rivals Chelsea collapsed.
