Ex-England international Rio Ferdinand has revealed who he would have picked between prime versions of Steven Gerrard and Roy Keane.
Gerrard is widely considered to be the greatest Liverpool player in the clubs history, proving his credentials on countless occasions during his 17-year spell at the club.
He played a key role in Liverpool’s success during the 2005 UEFA Champions League campaign which they would go on to win with a memorable victory over Italian giants AC Milan.
As for Keane, the former Ireland captain established himself as a key figure for Liverpool’s arch-rivals Manchester United up until his sudden departure in 2005 following a bust-up with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Ferdinand made no mistake in naming Gerrard ahead of former teammate Keane as one of the only players you would ‘pay to watch’ during their prime years.
“Paying to watch out of all these players, I would argue he’s the one up there as the one you pay to watch before them all in their prime. He would score an absolute 30-yard rocket.
He would curl one in, he would have a little bit of backspin and guile on a pass and assist, he would smash a ball across the box. He had every tool in the bag. He was a joke of a player.”
After making over 700 appearances for Liverpool, Gerrard announced that he would be leaving the club for LA Galaxy at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. He spent just one year in American before announcing his retirement from the sport in 2016.
