Legendary French defender Marcel Desailly has urged Chelsea to sign pursue the signing of one former Liverpool striker in particular.
After failing to find the form that he had produced at former club Benfica, Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez called time on his spell at Liverpool last summer, joining Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal for a fee of around £46 million.
Nunez played just shy of 150 games for the Reds in the three full seasons that he spent at the club, hitting the back of the net on 40 occasions during this period.
He was a member of the squad that won the 2024-25 Premier League title, becoming just the second Uruguayan international after former Manchester United forward Diego Forlan to achieve this feat.
In an interview with OLBG TV, former Chelsea skipper Desailly admitted that he believes Nunez would be a ‘perfect’ fit for Chelsea, as he claims the 26-year-old was the victim of ‘bad luck’ during his stint at Liverpool.
“Nunez was for me, perfect. Spot on. He had bad luck at Liverpool, but if Liverpool took him it means they’ve seen real potential.
I wanted Darwin Nunez to come into the [Chelsea] system, with confidence, with Maresca, with a good system. It could have really been helpful for Chelsea.
I would have really loved to see him in the squad. If he’s still in the market and Saudi is not suiting him, he could be the one that comes back.”
Nunez has had a positive start to his time in Saudi Arabia, providing 11 goal contributions in 16 appearances for Al-Hilal since the season began.
