Former Liverpool forward John Barnes believes there is one ‘unsung hero’ that deserves to be considered one of the club’s greatest ever players alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish.
Former skipper Gerrard is widely regarded as being the greatest player to have ever played for the Reds, although the same could be said about Scottish icon ‘King Kenny’.
Dalglish racked up an outstanding collection of honours throughout the course of his Liverpool tenure, including six League titles and three European Cups.
He made a return to the club as manager in 2011 but was relieved of his duties at the end of the same season after the club finished 8th in the Premier League.
Gerrard captained the club for a period of 12-years from 2003 right up until his shock departure in 2015. He played a pivotal role in the club’s success in the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League campaign which they eventually won following that monumental win over AC Milan.
In a feature with SPORTbible, John Barnes spoke fondly of Liverpool’s record appearance-maker Ian Callaghan, as he claims the former midfielder was an ‘unsung hero’ during one of the club’s greatest eras.
“Ian Callaghan played for Liverpool for many years from Bill Shankly all the way to Bob Paisley, but he’s what Liverpool was all about.
An unsung hero who won the European Cup, won the league, won the FA Cup, won everything for Liverpool.”
Callaghan made an incredible 857 appearances for Liverpool during the 19-years that he spent on Merseyside. The ex-England international won five League titles along the way, including two European Cups in the 1976-77 and 1977-78 seasons.
