Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has dismissed Alexander Isak’s current credentials in a shock statement.
Sweden international Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in a British record deal worth around £125 million in the summer transfer window, breaking the record that had been set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The 25-year-old has had somewhat of a frustrating start to his Liverpool career however, hitting the back of the net just three times in 16 appearances across all competitions.
Isak is currently recovering from a broken leg that he sustained in the club’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month, although it is expected that he will make a return to action before the end of the current season.
In a feature with OLBG UK, former Liverpool right-back Johnson admitted that he believes Isak is yet to establish himself as a world-class striker, although he does brandish Isak’s teammate Cody Gakpo as one of the best forward’s in world football.
Dutch international Gakpo joined Liverpool in a £44m transfer from PSV Eindhoven in January of 2023 and has proved to be a serious force in the club’s attacking output ever since.
The 26-year-old has scored 47 goals in all competitions for the Reds and was a key player in the club’s 2024-25 Premier League triumph which earned him a new long-term deal which he signed back in August.
