Liverpool great Ian Rush has given a surprising answer when naming the most important goal that he scored during his time on Merseyside.
The Welsh international initially played for Liverpool for 6-years between 1980 and 1986 before a move to Italian giants Juventus.
Rush made a return to Liverpool in 1988 and would spend a further 8-years at the club before transferring to fellow Premier League club Leeds United at the end of the 1995-96 season.
Throughout the course of his tenure with the Reds, Rush made a whopping 660 appearances across all competitions, hitting the back of the net on 346 occasions along the way.
His Liverpool trophy haul included five First Division titles, three FA Cups and two European Cups, making him one of the club’s most decorated players of all time.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Rush admitted that the very first goal that he scored for the club was his most important, as he claims it gave him the confidence to go on and become the highest scoring player in Liverpool history.
“I would say my first goal because my first goal gave me confidence to go on and [score more].
I think it was 8 or 9 games before I scored for Liverpool and to come on as sub in the European Cup and score — it was actually a tap-in at the Kop end — that gave me the confidence to go on and score as many as I did.”
Rush’s first goal for the club came in a 7-0 thrashing against Finnish outfit Oulun Palloseura during a European Cup tie at Anfield back in September of 1981, marking the beginning of what would prove to be a memorable career for the Welsh legend.
