Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has named one former teammate as the most underrated player he ever shared the pitch with.
Heskey made his long-awaited transfer to Liverpool in a then-record deal worth around £11 million in March of 2000, bringing an end to his time with fellow Premier League club Leicester City.
The ex-England international would go on to make 223 appearances in all competitions during his four years on Merseyside, hitting the back on 60 occasions in all competitions along the way.
Heskey played a key role in Liverpool’s 2001 treble winning season which saw them win the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup in one of the club’s most successful campaigns ever.
Speaking to OLBG UK, Heskey named Dietmar Hamann as the most underrated player he ever played with, as he claims the former Germany international went ‘under the radar’ during his spell at Liverpool.
“Probably Didi Hamann to be honest with you. I think he was a fantastic player playing for Liverpool and one that went under the radar, but he was very, very pivotal to not only just the midfield but us as players. Everything that we did, if it was good, bad or indifferent, he would give us that little pep talk and say ‘Yeah well done, well done’.”
Hamann signed for Liverpool from Newcastle United in the summer of 1999 and would go on to become somewhat of a cult hero during his seven years at the Reds.
‘Didi’ made just over 280 appearances for the club in that seven year period, racking up a haul of nine major trophies along the way including the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
