A legendary Premier League winning manager believes Anfield is the most feared stadium in European football.
The Reds played their inaugural fixture at the iconic stadium against Rotherham Town back in September of 1892, a friendly fixture that was played in front of just 200 fans.
Over the years, Anfield has played host to a number of memorable European fixtures in the club’s history. Perhaps the most memorable night in recent history came in May of 2019 when the Reds defeated Spanish giants Barcelona 4-0 (4-3 on aggregate) in one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history.
This famous win would see Liverpool advance to their second successive Champions League Final, which they would eventually win with a 2-0 victory over fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking to beIN Sports, legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger spoke fondly of the iconic stadium as he claims it is undoubtedly the ‘most heated’ ground in European football.
“Liverpool did not win the championship for 30 years, but in Europe they do well. Why? Anfield.
This is the most heated stadium in Europe [in the second leg]. That’s the only place you don’t want to go because the atmosphere, everything, is special there.”
Wenger visited Anfield on 25 occasions during his 22-years as Arsenal manager, collecting 7 wins against 11 losses, making him more qualified than most to pass judgement on the iconic Merseyside ground.
