Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor believes there was just one midfielder that was a better player than club legend Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard rose through the Liverpool academy ranks before signing a professional contract for the Reds in November of 1997.
The dynamic midfielder would go on to establish himself as a key player within the first time in the years that followed, earning himself the captains armband on October 2003 when he was just 23-years-old.
The England international made an outstanding 710 appearances for the club in his 17-year stint on Merseyside, making him the third highest appearance-maker in Liverpool’s history, and won eight major honours along the way, including the UEFA Champions League in 2005 and two FA Cup trophies in 2001 and 2006 respectively.
Gerrard’s name is often included in the conversation amongst the best midfielders of all time and whilst former teammate Mellor was clear Gerrard was better than Paul Scholes, Andrea Pirlo and AndrĂ©s Iniesta, he had to admit that there was one midfielder he couldn’t touch.
In a feature with OLBG UK, the ex-Liverpool forward named legendary French star Zinedine Zidane as the one midfielder that he believes was even better than Steven Gerrard.
Zidane is widely considered to be one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game. The former France international made over 200 appearances each for Real Madrid and Juventus, and earned himself the coveted Ballon d’Or trophy in 1998.
He won numerous major honours for club and country throughout the course of his glittering professional career, including the FIFA World Cup with France in 1998.
