Former England captain Bryan Robson has shared his thoughts on whether he believes former Liverpool forward John Barnes was a better player than England great Paul Gascoigne.
Barnes signed for Liverpool from fellow First Division club Watford for a fee of around £900,000 in the summer of 1987, bringing an end to his six year spell with the club.
He established himself as a key player in his first season with the club, hitting the back of the net on 15 occasions in the league which contributed significantly to the Reds’ title triumph.
Barnes would go on to make over 400 appearances for Liverpool in the ten years that he spent on Merseyside, winning multiple major trophies including two league titles and two FA Cups.
He left the club on a free transfer at the expiry of his contract in 1997 before eventually signing for Premier League club Newcastle United.
In a round of ‘Winner Stays On’ with OLBG UK, legendary player-turned-manager Bryan Robson made no mistake in ranking Paul Gascoigne ahead of Barnes when tasked with naming who he thought was the better player overall.
Whilst the later stages of his professional career were hampered with multiple personal issues, Gascoigne is still regarded as being one of the best players of his entire generation with Anfield legend Steven Gerrard naming ‘Gazza’ alongside Barnes as his two footballing icons.
Gascoigne played for Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United during his rollercoaster of a career, although he also had spells at Lazio and Rangers along the way.
