Jamie Carragher has surprisingly overlooked Andy Robertson when naming the greatest left-back in Liverpool history.
Robertson signed for the Reds from Hull City in a deal worth around £8 million back in the summer of 2017, bringing an end to his several year tenure with the Championship club.
The Scotland captain established himself as Liverpool’s number one choice at left-back by the midway point of his first season, scoring his first goal for the club against Brighton and Hove Albion in the final game of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
He has won a number of major honours during his time on Merseyside, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League trophy in the 2018-19 season.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher snubbed Robertson when revealing the best left-back to have ever played for Liverpool in his opinion, naming none other than Steve Nicol who played for the club during the 1980s.
“I’m going to go with Steve Nicol. He had a great combination with John Barnes in that late 80’s team and Steve Nicol was a little bit similar to be — right-back, centre-back, left-back. He was that good for Liverpool that he’s got to [be in my best 11].”
Former Scotland international Nicol spent 13-years on Merseyside between 1981 and 1994. He won numerous major trophies with the club along the way, including four First Division league titles and the European Cup in 1984.
