Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer have had their say on what they believe to be the greatest atmosphere ever seen at Anfield.
Liverpool moved into Anfield in September of 1892, winning their very first match 7-1 in a friendly fixture against Rotherham Town and the iconic Merseyside stadium has played host to a number of memorable matches throughout the years, with many taking place on enthralling European nights.
One memorable night at Anfield that sticks out is Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Spanish giants Barcelona in the semi-final of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League campaign.
Prior to the match, legendary manager Arsène Wenger labeled Anfield “the most heated stadium in Europe” and on that evening it did not disappoint.
Former England striker Alan Shearer was a part of the BBC Radio 5 Live commentary team that night and claimed that the atmosphere that night ‘took his breath away’.
“I don’t think I’ll see or hear an atmosphere like this again. The atmosphere was just something that took my breath away.
I have never seen anything like this before. I’ve played at Anfield when there is a superb atmosphere but this is something else, something special.
I’ve never seen it like this and the fans were driving their players forward from start to finish. It’s just been relentless. It was incredible from all the players. Wow.”
This is an opinion that is shared with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who once revealed in an interview with the Liverpool Echo that it was the best atmosphere he’s ever seen at the iconic stadium.
“As a fan and ex-player, this was probably the best atmosphere I’ve seen at Anfield. It took me back to Chelsea when we scored the Luis Garcia goal, to Olympiakos — the big games I experienced myself.”
Whilst this season has been difficult at times for Liverpool, there is no doubt that the clubs loyal fans will do all they can to push the squad forward and deliver more memorable nights at Anfield.
