Former Liverpool forward John Barnes has named an Arsenal legend as his favourite ever footballer.
After making over 200 appearances for Watford during his six year stint at the club, Barnes signed for Liverpool in the summer of 1987 for a fee of around £900,000.
He would go on to pull on the famous red shirt on over 400 occasions during the decade that he spent on Merseyside, scoring 108 goals in all competitions along the way. and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wingers of his generation.
Barnes won two First Division league titles, two FA Cups and two Football League Cups on Merseyside before he eventually departing Liverpool to sign for fellow Premier League club Newcastle United in 1997.
In an interview with The PFA, Barnes instantly selected former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Liam Brady in his ultimate PFA winners five-a-side team, declaring the Irishman as his favourite footballer of all time in a surprising admission.
“Liam Brady. My favourite player. He’s not British, but went to Juventus and was the best player in Italy. He was a fantastic footballer. People don’t know about him, but he was the most incredible footballer I’ve seen.”
Ex-Ireland international Brady began his professional career at Arsenal back in 1973 and would go on to make over 200 appearances for the London-based club during his seven year stint.
Brady would later sign for Italian giants Juventus for a fee of around £500,000 in 1980 before playing for Sampdoria, Inter Milan and Ascoli. He eventually made a return to England in 1987 when he signed for West Ham United, spending several years at the club before his career came to an end in 1990.
