Whilst he remains one of the most influential figures in Liverpool’s history, Kenny Dalglish once chased a Manchester United icon for his shirt in a shock revelation.
The former Scotland international is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, proving his credentials at both Liverpool and Celtic during his playing career.
Dalglish brought an end to his time at Celtic in the summer of 1977 when he signed for Liverpool in a deal worth around £400,000, a British record transfer fee at the time.
He established himself as a key addition to Liverpool’s attack in no time at all, scoring over 30 goals in his first season at the club including the winning goal in the 1977-78 European Cup Final.
By the end of his time on Merseyside, Dalglish had made over 515 appearances for the club, hitting the back of the net on 172 occasions in all competitions.
As revealed on an episode of This Is Your Life, Manchester United great Denis Law shared details of how ‘King Kenny’ once chased him down at the conclusion of a match between United and Celtic, where he claims Dalglish asked him for his match shirt.
“I was playing for [Manchester] United, Kenny was playing for Celtic. There was something like 50,000 people there, and after the game there’s a load of fans came onto the pitch. We’re all running for the tunnel to get into the dressing room and I felt a tug, and I thought it was a fan, but it was Kenny. He said, ‘Can I have your shirt?’
So, he not only took my shirt but he took my record as well. But he’s been terrific in English football, a credit to his country and Scotland should be proud of him.”
Dalglish and Law actually became teammater for the Scottish national team, playing a number of matches alongside each other. ‘King Kenny’ often describes Law as one of his heroes and a major influence on his playing career.
