Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has reflected on a heated on-pitch exchange he had with one former opponent.
Carragher played a key role at the heart of Liverpool’s defence during his 17-year spell on Merseyside, which culminated in him making 737 appearances for the club.
He played alongside some of the greatest Liverpool players of all time along the way, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Luis Suarez to name just a few.
Another Liverpool great that Carragher played alongside was ex-England international Robbie Fowler, who established himself as one of the best goalscorer’s in the clubs history, scoring 183 goals across two spells.
In resurfaced footage, Carragher reflected on a comment that he once made about Fowler, which was met with a shock response from Welsh legend Craig Bellamy who claimed ‘Carra’ couldn’t ‘lace Fowler’s boots’.
“When you played against [Craig Bellamy], he was the only player who ever spoke to me in the game and I’ll never forget what he said to me.
I was on the halfway line, he’s obviously up front and the ball has gone into Robbie Fowler but he’s lost it. And I’ve just gone ‘for f—k sake, Robbie’ and [Bellamy] replied, ‘how can you say anything about him? You can’t lace his f—king boots!’”
Bellamy would eventually become a teammate of both Fowler and Carragher at Liverpool. The former Wales star made over 50 appearances for Liverpool in two separate spells at the club in the 2006-07 and 2011-12 seasons.
