Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes Arne Slot must accomplish one thing to avoid leading the club to complete failure this season.
Despite finishing the 2024-25 Premier League season as champions, Liverpool have found themselves on a disappointing run of form at this stage of the new campaign where they currently sit at 6th in the table, 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
The Reds have already suffered seven defeats in the Premier League, falling short to the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Crystal Palace along the way.
However, Liverpool have had better success in this season’s UEFA Champions League competition. The Reds are currently on track to qualify for the knockout stages but must beat Qarabag at Anfield tonight.
There has been growing frustrations amongst fans, with the more vocal calling for Dutch coach Arne Slot to be sacked, especially after spending £450 million across the summer transfer window,
Speaking on talkSPORT, Danny Murphy says that Liverpool must finish in the top 4 of the Premier League this season to avoid a ‘complete failure’ as he claims there will be ‘no excuses’ for Arne Slot otherwise.
“You’ve got to win something at Liverpool, otherwise a majority of fans will class it as failure. With the money they’ve spent and the success of last season, if you don’t win something then you’ve failed.
You can fail gloriously and will that will accepted. You can lose an FA Cup final, or a Champions League semi-final on penalties. You can be there or thereabouts.
If they faultier in their Champions League campaign in the league and have no European football next season that will be complete failure. There’s no caveats, no excuses, nothing. If [Arne Slot] doesn’t get in the top four he’s failed.”
Liverpool’s next Premier League match is set to come against Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday evening, a must win fixture for the Reds in their bid to finish in the Champions League places this season.
