Liverpool legend Gary McAllister has shared an honest assessment on Liverpool’s monumental summer spending spree.
The Reds spent just shy of £450 million in the summer transfer window, the most that has ever been spent in European football history.
Germany star Florian Wirtz became the first major acquisition for the club before they completed the £125 million signing of Alexander Isak on deadline day.
Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez also made the move to Anfield for a combined fee of around £135 million throughout a frantic summer window.
Liverpool also came extremely close to signing England international Marc Guehi, but the transfer collapsed at the very last minute after Crystal Palace failed to sign a suitable replacement for their captain.
During an interview with talkSPORT, McAllister reflected on Liverpool’s summer spending spree and claims it has been a ‘difficult’ period of integration for each of the clubs new signings.
“I thought they were all good signings. They were all players that would enhance that team that had won the league. But it just shows you how difficult is to integrate five players. And when you’ve paid the money that you’ve paid for them, it’s assumed that they go in to the team. But it’s so hard to make so many changes.
Wirtz is an outstanding player. Germany’s best player, I think. Isak, so unlucky. He makes a great run to score the goal against Spurs and was unlucky (in the tackle against van de Ven). Ekitike has been excellent. Kerkez is a young player who will just get better and better. Frimpong is starting to show.”
In what has been a frustrating season so far, Liverpool will have their sights set on finishing the campaign strongly as they prepare to face Qarabag in the final UEFA Champions League group stage fixture tonight.
