Roy Hodgson has revealed the one change he wishes he had made during his time as Liverpool manager.
Hodgson signed a three-year deal to become Liverpool manager back in July of 2010, although his reign would last a little over eight months before he was eventually relieved of his duties.
By October, the Reds had found themselves third from the bottom of the Premier League after their opening seven fixtures — one of their worst ever starts to a league season.
Things did improve slightly, but Hodgson found himself under scrutiny once again after Christmas which led to him leaving the club by mutual consent on January 8, bringing an end to his short reign as manager.
He went on to manage West Bromwich Albion, England, Crystal Palace and Watford before returning to Crystal Palace for an 11-month spell between March 2023 and February 2024.
Speaking on The Managers podcast, ex-England manager Hodgson reflected on his time at Liverpool as he admits that he wished he had changed his coaching style before it was too late.
“It went badly, there’s no doubt about that.
I should laid aside the confidence that the results had given me at Fulham and asked, ‘how on earth am I going to ingratiate myself here’.
Looking back, I should have adopted a much more managerial approach and how can I (get the best out of players).”
Club legend Kenny Dalglish replaced Hodgson as caretaker manager shortly after he was dismissed.
‘King Kenny’ was later made permanent manager and signed a three-year deal in May of 2011, although his time at the club came to an end at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.
