If we miss out on Sahin, there’s always another. It’s been reported that Rodgers is scrambling together a bid in the region of £10mil for Manchester City winger Adam Johnson after he was deemed surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium. Much like Sahin, Johnson has failed to force his way into a big-money lineup and is looking to get paid for doing more than sitting on a bench. Sunderland has been splashing the cash this summer and is rumored to already be in talks with Johnson; though this has been dragging on for too long to be close to completion. As the boss looks to boost our top four aspirations and our sharpness in front of the net, the lure of European football could be the tipping point for Adam as Sunderland are unable to offer anything but the drab domestic life.
While we sit and hope no one tells Johnson that the Europa League is hardly glamorous, let’s all laugh at Newcastle and their £12mil offer for Andy Carroll. The big Geordie has been the subject of a number of inquiries and failed bids this summer, but that pittance from the Barcodes is next to embarrassing. Although it’s looking likely that Andy will be in the starting 11 against Hearts later today, it’s a toss up whether he’ll be here at the end of the window. The manger has yet to make up his mind, in the press anyways, on the English strikers future and continues to have bouts of memory loss. One day he’d be crazy to let him go and the next we’ll be considering offers, only to say he’s not going anywhere 24 hours later. Carroll rightly refused a loan move to West Ham earlier this summer after the clubs had come to an agreement on the terms, but staying and fighting for his place is starting to seem like a bad idea after Joe Cole – yes, that Joe Cole — made it onto the field before him in last Saturday’s 3-0 humbling at the Hawthorns. How does that saying go? Oh, that’s it; home is where you’re better than Joe.
Andy’s future may stay a question mark right up until the bell tolls, but the club is wasting no time in getting Daniel Agger sorted out. The Danish defender has reportedly been offered an £80,000 per week deal to fend off interest from Manchester City and tie him down to Anfield for the long term. After speculation regarding his own future earlier this year, Daniel’s defensive partner Martin Skrtel has finally signed a contract extension and was quick to talk about how he’d one day like to be a Reds legend. The Slovakian center back was voted Liverpool’s player of the season last year, though with Danny getting YNWA tattooed on his knuckles right in the middle of transfer mania, the Dane could be in with a shout to de-throne Skrtel based solely on his new ink.
As we get down to the dregs of this post, it seems like an appropriate time to have a little word on Clint Dempsey. Fulham officially lodged a complaint with the Premier League this morning regarding the Reds pursuit of the American striker. Dempsey is currently embroiled in winner-take-all game of handbags with boss Martin Jol over his proposed move to anywhere but Craven Cottage. Last month NESN.com, which is owned by Liverpool supremoes Fenway Sports Group, erroneously published a story claiming that Dempsey had joined the Reds. Since then, it’s been chaos in London with no movement on the deal and Clint refusing to play for the Cottagers. Jol said they’re not selling for less than what they think the American is worth and Liverpool refuse to budge over our own valuation and his wage demands. Dead in the water deal or deadline day delight? For the time being, Clint’s more interested, and determined, than we are.
