Henrikh Mkhitaryan Still Looks Likely to Land at Anfield

Have you seen Mkhitaryan’s double?
While convoluted player transfers like the one currently embroiling Henrikh Mkhitaryan are confusing for everyone trying to keep a handle on the various “sure things”, the News Desk is left to wonder if it’s just as bad for the players involved.

Just over the weekend, the Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder has had a host of destinations on the horizon after Chief Executive Sergei Palkin confirmed that he would be allowed to leave for the princely price of £25mil. Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund had a opening bid of £19.5mil rejected before Tottenham Hotspur and big spending Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala came out of the woodwork to complicate matters further; despite the increased interest, Liverpool still seem to be the frontrunners for the Armenians signature.

Russia Today reporter Alexey Yaroshevsky — who correctly confirmed the departures of Fernandinho and Willian before the deals were announced — claims that Liverpool have won the race to sign the highly rated attacker and that a deal will be completed subject to a successful medical. Other sources in Russia are also reporting that a fee of £25.6mil has been agreed between the two clubs and that Mkhitaryan — who scored 25 league goals last time out — will be unveiled as a Liverpool player in the coming days; still, there’s a need to stay pragmatic despite the positive signs with reports conflicting reports that conflict other reports. Best to take an Ativan or two, cross your fingers and ponder the future of Jay Spearing, who has been linked with a move to Wigan Athletic, instead.

My first comment ever – here or anywhere – I know I’m a bit of a saddo but I tend to get over excited about certain potential signings and Mkhitaryan (surely to be known as Henrikh if he comes!) fits the bill. I too read the reports by Yaroshevsky and anothe Russian insider and am genuinely excited at the thought of his potential signing. I wanna get excited but a long history as a Liverpool FC fan tells me that until he’s there at Melwood or Anfield and pictured signing on the dotted line, I shouldn’t celebrate too much! Fingers crossed though, eh!

Old news this, Alexey Yaroshevsky tweeted on Friday night, since then it’s gone a bit quiet and no new info regarding the transfer has been published. Over the past couple of days there have been many articles recycling the same tiered news, this is just another.

Selling players like Coates and Shelvey, while being prepared to loan out the likes of Carroll, Cole, Aquilani, and co makes no sense to me. Why do we loan out players we have no intention of keeping, and sell players who would do well to get a loan to another EPL team for experience. Coates for instance is young and foreign and so it is virtually impossible for him to get experience in the EPL if he never plays. So when he does play he’s rusty and ill adjusted. Why not loan him to a bottom of the pack club like Chelsea and Arsenal did with Sturridge and Wilshere to Bolton, and Man U’s Cleverley to Wigan, Chelsea’s Lukaku to Wigan. Loaning more players to EPL clubs will only improve youngsters. Loaning out players to League One and other European lower tiers gains the club nothing, and those players invariably walk away for nothing later on anyway. Coates, Shelvey, even Henderson, could all do with spells at clubs like Fulham even, if you consider what Kakaniklic has done thus far. And he was given away so that Konchesky could play in red. Liverpool are hopelessly foolish in the loan market. Carroll out, Sahin in? Epic fail! As a result, the 2m was too little to use for a replacement, and the 4m spent on Sahin was a rotten waste considering Dempsey cost 6m, and scored 9 goals while we lacked a forward for half a season. Liverpool needs to start getting these right. I envisage us loaning out Assaidi and Spearing and selling Coates and Shelvey, for absolutely no good reason what-so-ever.

huge, glaring mistakes were made last season and in previous ones – no doubt about that and you’ll hear no arguments from me. seems as thougb we’re taking strides to turn that page though. Aspas, Alberto, Toure, Mignolet and now being a front runner for Henrikh shows that we’re no shying away fron getting the business done and adding quality where it’s needed.

I’m sure as the window wears on more of our squad, Coates, etc., and where they’ll be playing next year will be addressed.

Caroll, Cole, Aquilani…players with heavy contracts and heavy wages… who would want to buy them? Seems that Liverpool is still paying some part of Aquilani’s wages…

I agree 100%. Coates, Suso, Coady, Yesil, Ibe, and Shelvey can be future stars they should be loaned out. Hendo gets a good amount of playing time now so it’s better to keep him. As for Spearing, Downing, and Assaidi I guess it’s time for them to be sold. I really liked Assaidi but Rogers never gave him playing time and doubt that’ll change after signing so many forwards already. YNWA

No one can pronounce his name, and having Henrikh and potentially Henno in the same team is confusing. Let’s just refer to him as Bob! 🙂

To sell a player you need a buyer. Remember how hard it was to sell Joe Cole? If a player gets no playing time, other clubs have no chance to evaluate their investment. Shit, I couldn’t even sell Cole in FIFA 12.

Plus, say these players come good on their loans. Its a chance to have potential quality still on your books, who can get the game minutes you can’t offer. But as with selling a player, you need a taker with your loan. We don’t have enough top quality to loan to entice PL teams to take them.

    Are you high!?….

We can’t just sell everyone cuz they had a bad game or even a bad season especially when they are young players and still developing! Look at Ince, we got rid of him and now we want to buy him back for god knows how much more than we sold him for. I’m not saying we shouldn’t get rid of some players uh um… Spearing and Downing… But Coates and the rest you mentioned arnt bad, just not good enough right now. We payed for them once so let’s give them time. It seriously pisses me off when we sell a player and he turns out to be pretty good! Especially when a year or two down the line we spend BIG to get a player of the same quality of the player we HAD and sold for piss and peanuts.

Selling Coates and Shelvey , I agree, is a big big mistake. Jonjo will become good in a season or two and I fear we will live to seriously regret his sale. Coates and Assaidi have never been properly brought into the first team and I believe that under Rodgers they never will. He is determined to sell them ( well give them away as is our want! these days)

it’s the double edged sword of buying / developing young talent or playing / buying established players; you need to find a good mix and it’s next to impossible to come by.
agree that sending a player on loan is the best way for them to get experience. if they can’t cut the mustard at a lower level club, they’re probably not going to do it at LFC.

agree on both fronts. Coates just needs games and Jonjo just needs a good run in a side. Coates could deal with a season long loan as long as we sign another CB.

agree about Coates, but could you remind who we sold that’s turned out to be pretty good ? we knew Ince was good but sold him because he and his Dad were creating a fuss because of not getting first team games

Sell Spearing, Jones,Downing and Shelvey, keep the rest, Flanno and Robbo are young, it’s too early to sell them, possible loans, as for Allen i think one more season to prove himself, he was excellent earlier in the season.

So bored of this now. Over 72 hours ago it was suggested that he would definitely be a Liverpool player within the next 72 hours. Just let us know when he has actually signed for someone.
