Steven Gerrard doesn’t need to do anything anymore; the Skipper has long confirmed his place in Liverpool folklore, but the homegrown midfielder hit yet another milestone this weekend to add to a career that’s positively littered with them. With the Reds a goal down and Luis Suarez pulled down in the box, ref Andre Mariner showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Gerrard, as he’s done so many times before, showed none either as he banged in his 100th Premier League goal.
Ever the company man, Gerrard was quick to acknowledge in his post-match interview that he would have easily swapped the goal that gave him his century in exchange for the two points his side dropped against the Magpies. “It’s a good milestone for me and a great personal achievement,” said the Reds skipper who continued, “Points for the team and where we finish in the league are my priority; if personal milestones get crossed off along the way, then great.”
The lifelong Liverpool fan becomes only the fourth midfielder in Premier League history to reach 100 league goals alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Although he’s not the first to hit this milestone, he’s arguably the best; well, at least we think he is.
