Neither team looked particularly strong up to that point, but when you fall behind, you have no choice but to look for a response — and that’s exactly what Steven Gerrard is for.

In the buildup, Hull defender Curtis Davies picked up a yellow card for a mistimed tackle on Jordan Henderson, leaving the free kick in perfect range for Gerrard. The shot, which bent around the wall with mere inches to spare, left former Rangers ‘keeper Alan McGregor with no chance and Hull manager Steve Bruce with a lot to think about going into the break.
