The moon is blue over Wearside tonight, but not because Chelsea have progressed to the quarter-finals of the League Cup. No, it’s quite the opposite actually as bottom of the Premier League Sunderland knocked Jose Mourinho’s side out of the competition on the back of a goal and an assist from Liverpool loanee –and former Blues trainee — Fabio Borini.
Despite controlling much of the 90+ minutes, all Chelsea could muster was a Lee Cattermole own goal early in the second half as the visitors held onto their slender lead with progression to the next round looking assured. With time ticking down, American striker Jozy Altidore scuffed a shot that fell invitingly for Borini running in from the wing; in a blink of an eye the Italian lashed in from a tight angle past Blues reserve ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer to send this one into extra time.
Chelsea held the upper hand throughout extra time as well, but they paid the price for their poor finishing when Ki Sung-Yueng — who saw his glorious diving header brilliantly saved by Schwarzer previously — was picked out by Borini in the box before thumping a shot past the stranded Australian.
Borini’s future on Merseyside seems to be a cause for debate despite the Italian, and manager Brendan Rodgers, saying that he still sees a future for himself at Anfield; still, it’s nice to see the 22-year old getting in the mix and showing his worth while on loan at Sunderland. That’s exactly what we want — and seeing him heap misery on Chelsea, who we meet over the crowded holiday period, is just an added bonus.
