Sturridge latched on to a perfectly weighted Raheem Sterling through-ball in the opening exchanges to put Liverpool ahead, and after Swansea scored two goals in four minutes to nullify Jordan Henderson’s effort, the 24-year old was on hand to nod home Luis Suarez’s cross and send his side into the break in the lead.
The incumbent record holder, often considered as lazy as he was prolific, started the impressive run to ten consecutive goals in March of 2002, before finishing it up at the beginning of the next season and it’s stood as a monumental feat ever since — but now Sturridge has a chance to overtake van Nistelrooy in the record books. The striker, despite picking up an injury at the end of November which ruled him out of the busy festive period, picked up exactly where he left off on his return to the Reds team and now has 21-league goals on the year.
On the scoresheet in each of his last eight Premier League matches, the Liverpool man is quickly closing in van Nistelrooy’s record, and should he score in each of his next three matches — which will see the Reds on the road to mid-table Southampton, old foes Manchester United and Welsh strugglers Cardiff City — the England man will break the miraculous record that stretches back over ten years.
