VIDEO: Borini Scores the Winner as Sunderland Survive

We’ve been keeping a close eye on a few of the players Liverpool sent out on loan this season and one that continues to pop up — for all the right reasons — is Fabio Borini. The Italian stiker, currently plying his trade at the Stadium of Light for Gus Poyet’s Sunderland side, has been popping up with big goals this year and yesterday was no exception when the 23-year old’s first half strike against West Bromwich Albion ended up ensuring the Black Cat’s Premier League status.

The Weirside club looked certain for the drop, but a string of rousing performances has saw them sneak out of the relegation zone and into safety. Jack Colback opened the scoring with a prodded finish early in the half to send the home side into raptures before Borini doubled up with a neat volley just over fifteen minutes later. With the season winding down, question marks still remain regarding the Italian’s future on Merseyside despite Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insisting that he’ll return to Anfield this summer.

“Fabio went out to get games, go on loan and play more regularly than what he was playing here. He’s done that. He’s shown with some of the goals he’s scored – in particular against the big teams – the qualities he has” said the Northern Irishman. “Fabio will come back in the summer and he’ll be better having played that season then we’ll review it from there.”

With Champions League football already secured for next season, Rodgers will require a much larger squad to cope with the increased number of matches. With Iago Aspas looking like he’s on the outs and Luis Alberto in limbo, there could well be a spot a spot for Borini in the squad somewhere.
