Although he has absolutely nothing to apologize for, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has expressed his sincerest sympathies to Reds fans everywhere after missing out on the Premier League title yesterday.
Manchester City claimed their second triumph in three years with a 2-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad yesterday. Liverpool’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea at the end of April coupled with the 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace last week put the Citizens in the drivers seat and they never looked like turning back — or even slowing down. The return of Champions League football to Anfield will come with major benefits for both boss Brendan Rodgers and the squad, but even though their prime objective is met, Sturridge isn’t happy coming in second.
“I know we set the target of reaching the Champions League but I can’t stand here and say I’m happy. I am gutted,” explained the striker. “I know we’ve gone from seventh to second but I am never happy coming second no matter what I’m playing, whether it’s table tennis, cricket or whatever, I don’t like losing.” The 24-year old, who was unsurprisingly named to England’s World Cup squad earlier today, scored 21-league goals this season, finishing just behind strike partner Luis Suarez in the race for the Golden Boot. Despite enjoying a fantastic season in front of net, Sturridge wants the big prize.
“We’re all hungry for success and the fans deserve success. They’ve given us great support from the first minute to the last and I apologise to them for not winning the Premier League” he continued. “I’ll do everything in my power, just like my team-mates will, to try to ensure we do that for them next season. I believe we can.” Usually talk like this is just idle chatter, but with Brendan Rodgers transforming the Reds into an attacking powerhouse, what was once just talk is now a very real possibility.
