Rodgers Won’t Put a Figure on Summer Spending

With the Premier League season well and truly over, newly named League Managers’ Association manager of the year Brendan Rodgers is already back to work and wading through the transfer market.

With Champions League football and an immense amount brought in through TV revenues this season, the Reds manager should have a substantial budget at his disposal — he’s just about to put a number on it. “I don’t want to put a figure on how many but I would rather have one or two absolute top players than seven that might not help us,” the Northern Irishman told the clubs official website. “It’s about the quality. We can’t be going into the Champions League this year with doubts about players. We have to be going in knowing what the players’ capacity to play is and their capabilities.”

As Rodgers looks to assemble a squad that can compete on a high level on both the domestic front and in Europe, he’s confident that the spine of the team is already there and it’ll just be a few new names needed to augment it. With a big money bid already in for Southampton captain Adam Lallana and whispers of a move for Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker on the horizon, the Reds boss is moving quick to get his business done early in the transfer window.

“Ideally you would want to get things done beforehand but it is difficult because transfers are so complex,” he said of the Reds transfer plans for the summer. “The World Cup does make it difficult but the club and ourselves have been preparing for quite a few months now so we will try and get the business done as early as we can.”

With prices set to inflate following this summers showpiece event, getting players in early is certainly the best plan. Just because we have money to spend, that doesn’t mean we have to throw it away needlessly…
