Following his sending off against Ecuador in England’s second warm up game before the World Cup, England boss Roy Hodgson admitted that though he’s going to have to keep an eye on Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling, his maturity and the way he handled himself following the incident impressed him. “Of course, he will need some looking after now. But we’ve got plenty of people who can do that and I would be disappointed if he hadn’t looked forlorn and had come off the pitch whistling” said the Three Lion’s manager. “That would make me ask questions of him.”

Sterling scored nine goals and created five more during his breakout season at Anfield as the Reds romped to a second place finish in the Premier League and catapulted the youngster into the national set-up. Although he’s suspended for England’s final warm-up match — this Saturday against Honduras — there’s a good possibility that he’ll be in the frame for at least a spot on the bench when the Three Lion’s open their World Cup campaign against Italy on June, 14th.

A rush of blood to the head, and a over zealous ref, may have dashed his chances of staking a further claim towards a starting spot, Hodgson remains impressed with the 19-year olds cool demeanour in what turned out to be a tense situation. “Even Sterling, when he was surrounded by players trying to grab him by the throat, showed remarkable maturity” explained the Three Lion’s boss. “He committed what the referee decided was a serious foul and got sent off but I’m not going to be too harsh on him for that.”
