Trabzonspor Target Liverpool Defender Kolo Toure

Turkey interest?

There’s a bit of unsubstantiated news floating about that the president of Turkish side Trabzonspor will be on Merseyside this week to negotiate a move for Liverpool defender Kolo Toure as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming campaign.

If you’re rolling you’re eyes about this point, you’re certainly not on your own. The veteran center half — who joined the Anfield outfit on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer — was brought in with the understanding that he’d see out his two year deal as experienced player in a side full to the brim with youngsters that are still wet behind the ears. Letting him go, or even imagining that he’d be angling for a move, really wouldn’t make that much sense, would it?

With Jamie Carragher calling time on his Liverpool career, Toure immediately became a fan favourite for the Anfield faithful. Although a series of blunders near the end of the season made a number of pundits seriously question whether or not he was past it, the 32-year old was never brought in to seriously challenge for a starting role anyway, so a bit of rust when he does get a run in the side is expected.

Since Trabzonspor already have a pair of reliable center-halves, it’s looking like the Turkish side is targeting Toure in the same capacity — experienced cover for their starting duo — which begs the question why he’d move to Turkey to potentially play in the Europa League when he can stay in England, likely on better wages, and potentially find himself back in the Champions League?

Let’s leave that up to you to decide…
