Brendan Rodgers Wants More Goals from Everyone Following Opening Weekend Win

More goals? That’s right.

Liverpool may have gotten their Premier League campaign off to a winning start with a 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield on Sunday, but Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is looking for more from his team — specifically, more goals.

Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge both got off the mark for the the Merseysiders as goals on either side of the break cancelled out Nathaniel Clyne’s second half rocket. Even though many are calling on the Reds to improve their defensive stability, Rodgers was pleased to watch his side grind out the win, and like any manager, he’s always looking for ways his team can improve.

Although the loss of star striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona is sure to put a dent in their goal tally for the year, Rodgers has brought in a wealth of attacking talent to Liverpool over the summer to make up for the Uruguayan’s departure. With the Reds still in the market for a top class striker, you wouldn’t be remiss to take a punt on the Anfield outfit scoring a bushel of goals during the upcoming campaign — which is exactly what he wants.

“More goals from everyone, that’s the objective,” said the Northern Irishman after a gritty display saw them squeak past Ronald Koeman’s resilient Southampton side. “A lot of the games here at Anfield we were winning reasonably comfortably last season, so we knew that the expectancy for us was going to be to win the game. We won’t always win by playing beautiful football. Sometimes we’re going to have to dig in and grind a result out, and that’s what we did.”
