Lucas Won’t Rule Out Liverpool Departure

Ever since former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez took over at Serie A side Napoli, there’s been rumours linking Reds midfielder Lucas with a reunion with his old manager. This summer that hasn’t abated one bit with the link as strong as ever.
A busy summer saw the Anfield outfit bring in a plethora of new players as they look to navigate the hurdles of Champions League football for the first time since 2009. Although Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will need experienced players at his disposal to help guide his younger charges along, Lucas looks increasingly on the outs with the Brazilian destroyer refusing to rule out a move away from Merseyside.
“I can never say never” he told Brazilian media outlet Vavel when asked about Napoli’s interest. “Today my thoughts are with Liverpool and I always leave that part of the proposals and boring affairs with my manager. If something good for me arises for me and the club, it might happen. But now I’m focused on having a good season for Liverpool.”
The 27-year old was pushed to the fringes of the team last season as Reds captain Steven Gerrard embraced a deeper role. This has only been exacerbated by Liverpool’s capture of highly rated youngster Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the summer, but should he stay at Anfield, Lucas will look to use this as incentive to fight harder for a spot in the squad. “He is a young, dynamic wheel in our team that will help us a lot” he said of the German-Turkish midfielder. “He, like me, can act both as the first man, and as the second. I will be committed to winning this race against Emre Can healthily.”
