Steven Gerrard Wants Jordan Henderson to Get Liverpool Armband

What the future holds

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has only just been named the Anfield outfits new vice-captain, but already current skipper Steven Gerrard is talking about the 24-year old taking the reigns when he finally decides to call time on his playing career.

The 34-year old Anfield legend is slowing approaching the end of his time with the Reds and he feels that the former Sunderland man would be the perfect replacement for him. “I would love nothing better than when I call it a day here to pass the armband over to him, not just because he’s a great player but he’s a top lad as well,” Gerrard told the Liverpool ECHO. “He comes from a great family, a similar family to myself, so it’ll be a very proud day when I give that over.”

As Liverpool laboured to a 3-1 loss against West Ham United yesterday, Henderson, in typical fashion, was involved in everything and was one of the few Reds players that could leave East London with his head up after a dismal performance saw the Merseysiders drop to their second Premier League match on the hop. Despite the obvious rough patch his side are going through, he’s got nothing but respect for his new deputy.

“I think it’s very well deserved. I think he has made tremendous progress and I think it sums him up as a man first and foremost but also as a player” he said when asked about the midfielder being handed the vice-captaincy. “No-one works harder than this lad both on and off the pitch. He is very professional and I think he epitomises everything a captain is. He leads by example, does the right things, never gives up, works just as hard without the ball as he does with it. And I am sure he is going to go on and captain this club. And what a story it will be if he does become the proper captain in years to come.”
