Phil Jagielka’s equalizer late into injury time in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with cross-town rivals Everton has been described a few ways: magnificent, breath-taking, astounding, spectacular and there was even a “stupendous” thrown out there. Although Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville admits that scoring that kind of goal is something he could only dream about, the ex-Manchester United man also thinks that Reds ‘keeper Simon Mignolet could have kept it out.

“I’m ready for the pelters that come my way and it is slightly controversial but I think Mignolet has got to do better and I think he should save it. “I’d want my goalkeeper to save it” he said during the popular Monday Night Football segment he hosts with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. “He has quite a clear view of the ball and it’s harsh but I’d expect a top level goalkeeper to save this shot.”

The Belgian’s displays have brought increased scrutiny on the part he’s played in both Liverpool’s leaky defense and their poor start to the season. Although a large portion of the criticism he’s come in for has been warranted, Neville’s expectations seem a bit of whack.

“He’s so low Mignolet, he’s crouched down and as that ball goes past him he is literally two or three inches away from that ball” he continued. “I’d say for a top class goalkeeper that is a goal that should have been saved, his positioning is all wrong.”

You just don’t keep those out, Gary.

Actually I think Gary as a point.

For a team that trying to make it into the top 6 it is way too harsh, but he is working on the assumption that Liverpool are building a team to become the best in the world.

It is a credit to what BR has done.

Also Jagielka has reached a new level of passing this season. This season his long passing has been as good as Gerrard’s. There is a whoscored article about it.

I know that long passing is not the same as long shots, but with no one closing him down I don’t think any one should be surprised that it went in.
