Glen Johnson Working on Fitness After Missing Out for England

Working his way back

Liverpool fullback Glen Johnson has only just returned to action after pulling up with an injury during the Reds loss to Manchester City all the way back in August, and with a lack of match fitness a major concern, the veteran defender has been left out of the England squad for the first time in a long time.

While the Three Lions were romping to victory over European minnows San Marino yesterday, the ex-Portsmouth man was recovering from training at Melwood — something he’s not used to doing during international breaks. “It is strange for me as I’ve not been too used to it – I’m normally away,” the defender told the Liverpool ECHO. “It’s different. I’m training with the Academy lads and some players who I’ve never met before. It’s good and it’s different. Of course, I’d rather be away on international duty.”

The 30-year old, who has yet to sign a new contract with the Anfield outfit, is set to help ease Reds boss Brendan Rodgers injury concerns ahead of their meeting with Queens Park Rangers next weekend. Although he made a cameo appearance in the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion last weekend, but he’s not quite up to speed quite yet and much of the lay-off from league action will be spent building up fitness in preparation for a number of high-profile fixtures — including a home and away with European champions Real Madrid — just over the horizon.

“My body feels good. I just need some game time” he said when asked about his recovery. “We’ve got a practice match here at Melwood today, so it would be good to get a good 90 minutes in there. Other than that I feel good. I just want to take it week by week. I’m back out on the pitch now and I want to stay fit and well and get back into the team and put in some good performances.”
