A place with a Major League Soccer side always looked to be Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s next move after announcing that he’ll be leaving Anfield at the end of the season with the LA Galaxy looking more and more likely to be his final destination.
Although the New York Red Bulls have expressed an interest in being the team that brings the 34-year old to the North American market, sunny California looks to have won out with respected BBC journalist Ben Smith reporting that he’ll bring in somewhere in the region of £6mil during his 18-month contract with Los Galácticos — and, of course, get out of the rain for a little while.
This news comes amid claims for former players and pundits alike that the club didn’t do enough to keep their talisman on Merseyside. Despite making claims that he could see him managing the Reds in the future, boss Brendan Rodgers admits that Gerrard was not offered a coaching role at the club in a bid to keep him from leaving. “Steven had an ambassadorial role at the club but there wasn’t a coaching offer made to him,” said the Northern Irishman. “Steven hasn’t got his badges and he is not the sort who would go into coaching blind. His focus was very much on the present, which means playing, because he believes he can play on beyond this season.”
While there remains little doubt that Gerrard will return to Liverpool at some point, in some capacity, it looks like he’ll be doing it by way of the City of Angels where he’ll join former team-mate Robbie Keane as one of the three designated players at the disposal of Galaxy boss Bruce Arena.
