VIDEO: Sturridge Opens the Scoring as Liverpool Lead Swansea City
Liverpool were cruising in the first 20-minutes as goals from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson set Anfield alight, but Swansea City wasn’t about to roll over and play dead with a pair of goals in four minutes drawing the visitors level until SAS combined to restore the lead.
It was a wonderful pass with the outside of Raheem Sterling’s foot that saw Sturridge run through on Swans ‘keeper Michel Vorm, rounding the Dutchman before slotting home in his eighth successive Premier League game. Jordan Henderson doubled up as the half wore on, finishing cooly from the top of the box on his 100th start for Liverpool.
It was all going Brendan Rodgers way until former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who played a part in all four goals in the reverse fixture, smashed home first time with a shot that even got applauded by the Kop. The Liverpool faithful weren’t quite as accommodating three minutes later when Martin Skrtel gave up a free-kick for a foul on the former Liverpool man and the resulting delivery took a few knocks after Wilfried Bony’s initial header, finally beating Simon Mignolet after hitting Skrtel’s shoulder.
It was enough for a few moments of panic; Liverpool aren’t used to giving up too many goals at Anfield, but they’re lead was restored going into the half when a wonderful passage of play ended with Luis Suarez sending in an inch perfect cross for Daniel Sturridge to head home for his second of the match and his 24th goal in his last 24 games for the Reds.
