It might be a bit bold, but following the 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, the travelling Kop was unabashed in their belief that Liverpool are en route to securing their first title of the Premier League era.
We spent the entire season talking down our chances, but with nine matches left in the season, the Reds are sitting a mere four points off league leaders Chelsea with a match in hand and the London outfit yet to visit Anfield.
Brendan Rodgers will pit his wits against his old mentor in Jose Mourinho when the Blues travel to Merseyside at the end of April. In the interim, the Northern Irishman will need to navigate meetings with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City — two matches which could also play major roles in deciding the outcome of the campaign.
Although the jubilant cry of “We’re going to win the league” echoing down from the away end on Sunday may be replaced with “We’re going to qualifying for the Champions League” by the time May rolls around, you’ll catch few Kopites complaining; after finishing seventh last season, just being in the title race at this stage of the season is almost unfounded and gives us real hope that next year will see us build from strength to strength.
That is, of course, if we don’t go ahead and nick it this year…
