Simon Mignolet Here for the Long Haul

Staying put

With the 2-0 loss to Chelsea still sending echoes across the Premier League landscape, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has jumped to defend Reds ‘keeper Simon Mignolet after the Belgian came in for some criticism following our last two matches.

Although the 26-year old shot-stopper wasn’t at fault for the two goals conceded on Sunday, there have been whispers that the Anfield outfit will be keeping their eyes open for a replacement this coming summer — something Rodgers has rubbished right off the bat. While some sections of the Reds support think hanging onto Mignolet is a gamble, they may need to click here to learn about sports betting, because Rodgers think’s Simon has just what it takes to backstop his side to glory.

“I’ve been delighted with Simon since he has come in,” said Rodgers in a recent chat with the Liverpool ECHO. “I think he’s an outstanding goalkeeper who is only going to get better and better.” The Belgian has become known for his clutch saves and quick reflexes, but the indecisiveness he’s shown from time to time with crosses and his perceived lack of ability to effectively distribute the ball as well as his predecessor has earned him his detractors — not that the Anfield boss wasn’t expecting that.

“He has come into a huge club and replaced a legendary figure at the club in Pepe Reina” he continued. “That was always going to take a bit of time. But over the course of the season he has made a big contribution. I don’t forget the significance of some of the saves he has made.” Although the title chasing Reds remain top of the table, their poor defensive record has made things interesting throughout the season, but there’s little to indicate that Mignolet is root of that problem. “Simon hasn’t ever cost us a game but he has certainly gained us points. He’s an excellent goalkeeper.”
