VIDEO: Rampant Liverpool Down Shamrock Rovers in Dublin
The Premier League season might be over, but Liverpool were back in action on Wednesday night when they romped to a 4-0 friendly victory over Premier Division of the League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers.
Goals from Iago Aspas, the returning Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and academy striker Jack Dunn rounded out a comfortable victory for Brendan Rodgers side and gave some of the fringe players — or those not going to the World Cup — a chance to have a run out in the newly launched Away Kit.
“The disappointment didn’t last too long,” reflected the Reds boss when asked about missing out on the Premier League title. “I’d said to the players on the Sunday before the game that, whatever, we would celebrate the incredible journey that we have been on this season.” Irish Kopites were hoping beyond hope that Liverpool’s first match as champions would be at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, but it wasn’t to be — and that’s something that wasn’t on Rodgers mind.
“Our actual focus was on this game because we needed to focus on here. We had a job to do and we had a duty to our supporters to perform well and work hard” continued the Northern Irishman. “The reflection comes now that this is finished. But my overriding feeling is one of pride.”
Finishing second on the last day of the season and qualifying for the Champions League next season to the surprise of everyone? That doesn’t sound like something to cry about.
