Aspas Could be Makeweight in Moreno Deal
As Liverpool’s move for Sevilla fullback Alberto Moreno drags on, a new twist has emerged in the saga with misfit Reds striker Iago Aspas being mooted as the potential makeweight that could finally see the deal finalized.
Originally, it was promising youngster Suso that would be moving in the opposite direction to sweeten the pot, but with the Anfield outfit completing the signing of Southampton man Rickie Lambert yesterday, Aspas has been pushed even farther down an already steep pecking order. With the Spaniard struggling to even make the bench, he’d consider any route out of Liverpool to be a good one and the fact that he’d be returning to both a league and lifestyle that he knows better than any comes as an added bonus — that is, if it comes to fruition.
Sevilla club president Jose Castro confirmed that Liverpool were interested in a move for Moreno, but has pulled back on rumours that it was a basically a done deal. “It’s true that there’s interest from Liverpool and we’re waiting to see if that turns into a reality, which right now, it isn’t,” he told the clubs official television channel. “This club is experiencing a time of economic stability and we don’t need to sell. We’re going to be firm about this and we’ll only consider selling outside the market, which gives us the opportunity to make our team competitive.”
Whether or not this is just rhetoric remains to be seen with a number of sources citing that a deal has been agreed between the two sides with only a small number of details, like a payment schedule left to be decided. Of course, if that was the case, then this whole Aspas link is just a bunch of baloney, but according to Seville media outlet Estadio Deportivo — who we’ve been reading a lot of lately — Aspas could very well be on his way back to Spain by the end of the week with representatives from Sevilla expected on Merseyside to hash out the finer details of Moreno’s move by the weekend.
Whether he goes to Sevilla or not, it’s likely that Aspas will be moving on this summer; it’s more a matter of when than if.
I would much rather see Serge Aurier sign for us…
