CONFIRMED: Joe Gomez Trades South London for Merseyside

Looking to put a disappointing season as far behind them as possible, Liverpool have been making waves in the transfer market with moves for a number of home grown players and they announced another significant acquisition today with Charlton defender Joe Gomez joining the Reds on a long term deal.

The promising defender, who made 24-appearances in all competitions for the Championship side last year, was in high demand following a series of impressive performances, but ultimately chose Anfield over a host of other clubs in a move believed to be worth £3.5mil. Still wet behind the ears, Gomez will be joining Liverpool on their pre-season tours of Australia, the Far East and Finland, but is expected to go out on loan before the beginning of the new season.

“The club has got great history and it’s a great club, and one that I’ve always been following from when I was young,” he said in his first interview with the clubs official website. “The style of football and the top players here was somewhere that I wanted to go and get better and learn, and play good football. It was an easy decision.”

Gomez, who is one for the future, joins a host of promising talent at Anfield and an increasingly large English contingent. Manchester City man James Milner and Burnley FC striker Danny Ings will both move to Merseyside at the beginning of July when their contracts with their respective clubs expire and Southampton fullback Nathaniel Clyne is expected to complete a move to the Reds in the coming weeks with Liverpool upping their interest in the 24-year old after having an initial £10mil bid for his services rejected.
