Marco Reus to Liverpool? Go Ahead and Hold Your Breath

With want-away winger Raheem Sterling almost certainly off to Manchester City for an eye-watering fee, just who will replace the 20-year old has been a cause for debate in the media. While the names of Barcelona attacker Pedro Rodriguez and Real Madrid wide-man Denis Cheryshev have been kicked around, things are starting to get out of hand with various reports linking Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus with a move to Merseyside.

This, of course, is nothing new. When the German forward was stalling on signing a new deal with Die Schwarzgelben, the Reds — along with about a dozen other sides — were reported to have had a keen interest in temping the 26-year old away from the Westfalenstadion, but it was believed that only Barcelona or Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich would be able to prise him from the grasp of his beloved Dortmund.

While that could very well still be the case, the latest bit doing the rounds is that Reus, who ended up putting pen to paper, isn’t interested in battling it out with Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. for a spot in the Catalan clubs much lauded attacking triumvirate. It’s an interesting story, whether it’s true or not, but should the exciting attacker make himself available, Liverpool surely won’t be the only one that comes knocking.

The bulk of the cash the Reds bring in from the sale of Sterling will almost certainly be used to bring in a striker with Aston Villa hit-man Christian Benteke apparently topping the wish list. If and when that’s completed and how much of his £32.5mil asking price we end up paying could dictate whether we could even considering joining any hypothetical race for Reus’s signature, but we’d also have to convince him that the Champions League isn’t all that great and that isn’t not the size of your wage packet, it’s who signs it that matters.

On second thought, let’s not hold our breath on this one…

Reus has been injured a lot in the last couple of years. Benteke would be perfect. He has the pace to run onto through balls and the finishing ability. Moreno and Clyne would have a target to hit in the box too. Henderson and Milner could pick him out from midfield.

Reus has been linked with a LFC move for 2 years now. Didn’t believe it then, don’t believe it now! I don’t know why, I guess the tabloids run out of fresh targets. For my money Lacazette would be the perfect fit. Our style of play has very little to do with whipping in crosses (Carroll) so I think Benteke might confuse the style of play. I wouldn’t be upset to see Benteke come in, but for the money we should be able to do better. We’ve never replaced the goals Suarez left behind and it always seems the issue is on the back burner while we worry about building the unbreakable defense. That’s all great, but if you want to help the defense you have to keep the squad on the front foot with the ball staying further up the pitch and bagging some goals. We desperately need a versatile goalscorer that can suck in defenders and free up space. St. Suarez was a master of bagging goals, baffling defenders and making every player around him a superstar. We need a wildcard and everything else will fall into place.

“Lacazette would be the perfect fit”..agree 100%. With his pace and clinical finishing with our style of play(imagine Coutinho and Firmino through balls) most definitely Liverpool would challenge again. But..that’s a pipe dream. I believe he’s going to PSG. He knows he can score in Ligue 1 and Euros coming. Too big a risk to switch leagues.

I wouldn’t say Benteke “would be perfect”. But I believe he’s the best option in our situation. There’s not a whole lot of top strikers available. Unless you want to pay £65m for Higuain or Cavani with £250k wages. That’s not us. I think if we get Benteke and a good DM(Carvalho/Illara) we can compete for top 4. Unfortunately it looks like Rodgers doesn’t value the DM(rumors of Lucas leaving). Wonder why we leak goals. Skrtel and Sakho aren’t bad… Need a first XI striker!!..Reus never

I understand what your saying…but what’s to say he won’t turn out to be another Cisse, decent but not great. Physically he may not handle the PL where as Benteke is a proven goal scorer in the league plus offers a threat of corners and free kicks…I think there are good counter arguments for Benteke and I wouldnt be disappointed at all if we signed him…

I agree, there’s more to Benteke than being a target man upfront…he scores and is deceptively quick, everyone wants Lacazette but I’m not sure he could handle to PL, could be another Cisse, Remy etc…

I don’t think its a case of not valuing DM, he just doesn’t trust Lucas in there…and I’ve been calling for an upgrade in that position for seasons, if we did sign the DMs you mention above then Lucas could leave…

Benteke has a goal every other game. And he scores more through skill and movement. It’s just that he’s also excellent in the air. Lacazette hadn’t scored too many before last season.

If he doesn’t trust the player with the best tackling ratio in lfc plus top five in the world in the same category who’s he going to trust?
Check who scored ud see what I mean. He’s a poor man’s guadiola who doesn’t respect steel in the middle same as pep. And he wonders why he hasn’t succeeded in Europe. Even with suarez. All the teams that concede less than us pretty much play 2 or at least one player who’s there, in front of the back 4 breaking up play or driving forward.
And it’s not as if we have a goal scoring machine anymore for opponents to sit back anymore. We are blunt in attack and still porous in defence. Even with fermino in Im still worried we’ll still not make top 4 next season barring a man city implosion and a miraculously marvellous performance from our strikers.

Anyway reus maybe the big name we all want but he’s very much injury prone. The perfect player we need is aubemeyang. Give him a pay rise Ala what sterling wanted pay 30 million for him and he’s ours. Hes a rich man’s sterling and that’s what we need. And I think our capture of fermino would entice him.
He brings goals and much needed pace plus he can play all the positions sterling can. He’s what we need.

Mate I’d have decent stats if I played for a top 6 side for 8 seasons and had no one challenging for my position…sorry I just disagree I think Lucas is average and could name 10+ players in the PL allow that would do a better job than him nevermind the world, if you think he’s in the top 5 best DMs in the world based on stats that’s worrying / deluded…but hey that’s your opinion so I’ll respect it 🙂

Well numbers don’t lie. There aren’t many players with a better take per game rate,3.9, #whoscored in the world. That number also better than any other player in the premier league. Maybe he needs competition yes but we almost always play with balance when he’s in front of the defence.
If he stayed injury free , I think we’d be a better team.

Sorry dude I disagree, numbers arent everything…I can see how good he is with my eyes I don’t need computer stats to tell me, answer this if you had to name a PL XI right now would he be in it?

I know dude I want us to sign Benteke, heard Utd are preparing a bid now…! Great watch him smash 20 in for them next season…

Maybe not. But I can’t name a stronger lfc without him. He’s not maybe the flashiest but he gets the job done much like Gary medel at inter/Chile Or lucas biglia. They do a job. Granted maybe we need a specialist dm to compete with him yes but his numbers are pretty good.
U seem to not value numbers enough. But they are a fundamental part of the game now.
The man played 20 games last year and managed 3.9 a game. That is nothing to turn your nose at.
Let’s tip the scale. If u had to pick a keeper out of two keepers who average 1.9 and 2.5 a season in saves made . I don’t think you’d pick the lower percentage keeper because he’s a big name no?

  • July 13, 2015 at 9:01 am

I’d take Medel over Lucas as he’s more mobile around the pitch…in terms of Lucas, if he’s that good why don’t Brazil pick him? Also with Can being versatile I’d play him DM over Lucas, if he can play CB surely he can sit infront of the defence. Ok let’s think about stats and how misleading they are, you say 3.9 tackles per game on average yet he didn’t make the top 8 tacklers in the league (see picture)…? Finally, the keepers question…it depends on the opposition if you played Bogdan in the Carling Cup and Mignolet in all other comps, in less games played Bogdan may have a better save ratio doesn’t mean he’s better? So it depends, if football was that easy Comolli would of succeeded as he bought players like Downing on stats alone and look how that ended…

Maybe, anyway I think we agree that we need competition at least for DM, whether you like Lucas or not 😉

That’s for sure. I don’t think can is the destroyer we need. Hes more intrested in driving forward and attacking than just sitting back if u know what I mean. More Yaya than Fernando. This NGOLO Kante guy from Caen,Ala top of my list, should do well for us. He’ll also probably also come cheap and at 24 he should do well and would cope well with the move. Do u agree?
