Although Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers more or less put rumours surrounding Alberto Moreno’s future to bed earlier this month by confirming that the Spanish defender, who was a notable absence from the Reds earlier pre-season matches, was struggling with an injury rather than being put out to pasture, Paris Saint-Germain fullback Lucas Digne’s recent request to leave the Parc des Princes will no doubt have ears perked up at the Merseyside club as they slyly check their bank balance.
The highly rated Frenchman is on the radar of a number of clubs despite making only 15-appearances in Ligue 1 last season as the billionaire boys completed a memorable domestic treble, sweeping aside all challengers with their considerably large crop of talent. Sitting very much behind Brazilian defender Maxwell in the PSG pecking order, Digne’s story is a pretty common one for young players at big clubs, but Les Parisiens boss Laurent Blanc has been quick to point out that it’s the 22-year old that’s looking for a move rather than the club trying to force him out the exit door.
“First, it is he who very clearly asked to leave,” he said when asked about the fullback’s future. “For now, he is with us, he is very professional, he trains very well and has prepared excellently. He has shown the results in friendlies,” he continued before playing down any actual interest in letting Digne break rank this summer. “This is firstly a very good thing for him and possibly for us, should he stay with us this season.”
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has given new-boy Joe Gomez a shot at impressing him during their pre-season friendlies, and though the 18-year old has raised an eye-brow or two with a handfull of assured performances, questions still remain whether or not the former Charlton Athletic man is ready for top-flight football. For the time being, you can certainly file this one in the unconfirmed and unsubstantiated pile, but the Northern Irishman is known to want competition for every single position and Digne, who fits the Reds buying model, would provide more than just that for the likes of Moreno and Jon Flanagan when he finally makes his long awaited return from injury.
