Reds Make Georginio Wijnaldum Approach, Look to Speed Deal Along

For all the talk of Liverpool making a move for Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko, it now appears that the Reds are going in an entirely different direction, but still staying on Tyneside, with a move for fellow middle man Georginio Wijnaldum for a fee rumour to be in the region of £20mil — quite a bit less than the absolutely insane £35mil price-tag the Magpies reportedly slapped on the talented Frenchman.

“Liverpool have made a move for Georginio Wijnaldum, the Newcastle United midfielder,” wrote respected journalist and noted Liverpool supporter Tony Barrett on Twitter, “and are hoping a fee can be agreed this week.”

It’s no secret that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to shake up his side this summer and a move for the Dutchman could do that in more ways that just one. The 25-year old is no stranger to Reds fans; not only has been linked with a move to Merseyside in the past, but he also scored a beautiful late goal as the Magpies ran out 2-0 winners back in December. Without European football to help spread the playing time around, bringing in a player like Wijnaldum, who apparently wants out as soon as possible, would almost certainly mean a high profile player will be shipped out — that is, if the Anfield outfit can convince Newcastle to part ways with him.

“Maybe, you never know,” said ex-Liverpool boss and now Newcastle supremo Rafa Benitez when asked if the duo would be sold. “Our idea is to keep these players, if it’s possible,” he continued, confirming that it won’t be easy to prise either Wijnaldum or Sissoko away. “But we know how football is now and the market and agents. Gini has trained really well, and I’m very happy with him.”
