Media review:

The Merseysiders have been linked with the Ajax star for quite some time. Last month, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed that Barca suspect Liverpool might be tempted to unite Van Dijk and De Ligt at Anfield.

Few days later, renowned Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce reported that the Reds have no plans to lure the highly rated central defender.

However, the rumors are still there. Earlier this month, German source Bild covered a story stating that signing the 19-year-old player could be Klopp’s next triumph.

Now, Mirror Sport have linked him with the European champions. The British source have stated that the major issue is that the Anfield club will have to shatter their pay structure in order to lure the £75million rated star, who is also wanted by the likes Barca, Man United, PSG and Bayern Munich.

Wage structure and Liverpool’s central defense:

At the moment, Egyptian international, Mohamed Salah, is the highest earner at Anfield. He earns £200,000-a-week. It is claimed that United are reportedly offering De Ligt £236,000-a-week and PSG are prepared to offer £256,000-a-week to lure him (Mirror Sport)

As far as Liverpool’s central defense is concerned, Jurgen Klopp has got players like Virgil van Dijk, Matip, Gomez and Lovren around.

Van Dijk is the leader of the back-line and the Dutch international featured in every PL game for the Reds last term. Under his command, Klopp’s men kept the highest number of clean sheets and conceded the fewest number of goals.

De Ligt’s performance and decision:

Last year, the Eredivisie star won the Dutch Footballer of the Year award. This year, Ajax won two major domestic titles (league and the cup) and also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League under his captaincy.

In the attacking third, he scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists in 55 games for the Dutch giants (Transfermarkt).

So far, he has played 17 games for the senior national team and scored 2 goals. Not to forget, he was on the score-sheet as the Netherlands ousted England from the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

However, in the final, Portugal were victorious and after the contest, De Ligt revealed that he will take his time to decide the future (TV Univision via Mirror Sport)

“I will go on vacation now. I am going to think about what’s best for me and then I will decide.”

Have your say – Do Liverpool need De Ligt? Should they break their wage structure to lure him?
