After two seasons in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard announced earlier in the week that he’d be leaving the Californian side for pastures yet to be determined with the 36-year old acknowledging that the game is definitely in his future.
“It’s certainly not the end of me in football terms,” said Gerrard, who has been linked with returning to Anfield in a coaching capacity as well as hitting the pitch again for either Championship side Newcastle United or Scottish powerhouses Celtic. “I’m going home to spend time with family and decide the best challenge,” explained the Liverpudlian, before adding, “I’ve got options on the pitch, off the pitch and I’ve got a bit of thinking to do over the next two, three weeks.”
While it seemed almost set in stone that he’d be taking up a post at Liverpool after Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made sure everyone knew that he’d be “always so welcome” at Anfield and confirming that talks between the two of them had already taken place, it’s emerged that League One strugglers MK Dons have been in touch with the ex-England captain over their vacant managers role. Although it’s believed that the Football Association is looking for fast track Gerrard with an eye to him taking up some kind of post with the national squad, with the 36-year old currently on track to earn his UEFA A coaching licence, there’d be no better primer than some time behind the bench.
Of course nothing is set in stone at this point, but should the Liverpool great decide to take the Dons up on their offer, it’ll be a straight out of the frying pan and into the fire situation. Fourth from the bottom in England’s third tier, the Buckinghamshire club have struggled since being relegated last season from their only stint in the Championship. Although they have a history of giving young managers a shot having appointed Karl Robinson, who stepped aside in October after six years in charge, when he was only 29-years old, the question remains whether a rookie boss like Gerrard would be able to steady the ship or only contribute in sinking it further.
