News of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Liverpool has been about as tight as a broken water main; first, his decision to announce his decision not to extend his contract was leaked on social media, then his destination as well as the details of his contract were widely made available. That being said, it comes as no surprise that the Reds skipper has announced that he’ll be moving to the LA Galaxy when his contract at Anfield is up.
“Their pursuit of me was very aggressive and the talks I’ve had with them have been very positive” said the 34-year old in his first interview with his new club. “They basically told me what I wanted to hear – they told me about the winning mentality at the club, their aims and goals for the future – and it suits me at this stage of my career. I think it’s the right time for a new challenge, a fresh challenge in my life and it’s an exciting one.”
After 26-years with his home town club, it’ll be just as strange for Kopites everywhere to see the midfield talisman wearing the shirt of some other team, but that’s still a awhile away and he was quick to remind everyone — including his new side — just where his heart lies.
“I said a few days ago my message to the Liverpool fans is that I owe them a lot. It’s been a privilege to play for and represent them for all of these years. I’ll continue to do that until the end of the season” said a clearly emotional Gerrard. “I can promise them that I will give everything I’ve got within to try and bring some success this season – and hopefully come back. That’s the message: my relationship with Liverpool doesn’t end in the summer. It will never end.”
