Daniel Sturridge Signs New Five Year Liverpool Contract

There’s a little bit of light in the darkness after all. Results on the pitch haven’t been anything to be happy about, but with Daniel Sturridge on the verge of making a return from injury, the club have announced that the 25-year old has signed a new five year contract.

“It feels great. It’s a big day in my life to commit to this club and to give the club my best years, which are ahead of me,” he told Liverpool’s official website after putting pen to paper. “I am thankful for the opportunity and that is the reason I committed my future. Everyone has been great with me, from the fans to the staff to the players, so it was an easy decision. I’m happy with how everything is going.”

The striker, who was rescued from a life on the bench and being played out of position at Chelsea, has been revelation since moving to Merseyside. With 21-league goals to his name last season, he finished second in the Premier League scoring race behind then strike partner Luis Suarez. Although there have been nothing in the way of credible links suggesting he’d be moving on from Anfield, the Reds decision to up his wages to a reported £150k per week to make sure his eyes don’t go wandering was the right decision; not that money ever seemed like a motivating factor for him.

“There are a lot of things I’m happy with, and how they’ve gone so far, but there is a lot to come. I may have had some good games and scored some goals, but literally this is the beginning in terms of what I can show” he explained. “I don’t feel I’ve shown really what I can do as a footballer. I am looking forward to the hard work, the training, the games and everything – and looking forward to the future.”
