Liverpool Lead Chase for Barcelona Misfit Alex Song

Liverpool bound?

Despite the chatter linking Liverpool with a move for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song quieting down over the last few weeks, the whispers are starting to increase in volume with reports out of Spain suggesting that the Reds are the front runners for the Barcelona midfielder’s signature.

With Lucas likely to leave the club — either permanently or on loan — before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to be keen on bringing in a replacement for the Brazilian with Song his number one choice. Although a the Catalan club are pushing for a permanent move, the Northern Irishman is keen on a try before you buy deal and is looking to bring him in on loan before making up his mind.

It’s been reported that both his former club Arsenal and Ligue One side Marseille are interested in scuppering Liverpool’s move for the Cameroon international before the window closes, but Spanish media outlet El Mundo Deportivo are reporting that the Anfield outfit remain in the pole position to sign the £10mil rated defensive midfielder.

Song has failed to hold down a consistent starting place since moving from the Gunners to Barcelona in the summer of 2012 and it’s believed he’ll be looking for more consistent first team football in the future. With a gruelling domestic campaign set to be punctuated by their first foray’s into the Champions League since 2009, the Reds have more than enough football to go around and the 26-year old’s penchant for not only hanging onto, but winning back possession jives well with the way Rodgers has Liverpool playing the game.
